An AI-powered recipe & cart

The Meijer business team funded a project leveraging artificial intelligence, challenging us to create a functional concept for iOS in two-weeks.

Our team decided to explore an AI-powered recipe and cart builder.

The project stemmed from a few iOS engineers' passion project utilizing artificial intelligence to offer recipes. Recognizing its potential yet observing ambiguity in business goals and an outdated user experience and interface, I proactively joined the effort.

It all began with an engineering proof of concept

Wireframes and user journey maps streamlined early development

I drew inspiration from Google's simple homepage design.

Attain recipes for anything with Recipe Hub

Get inspired by browsing popular and trending recipes

Capture and store recipes for delightful, repeated enjoyment

Experience worry-free cooking, regardless of portion size

Customize recipes by specifying ingredient & brand preferences

Effortlessly add ingredients to your cart with just one tap

All within intuitive navigation & interaction patterns

Result: A Successful Exploratory Project

Recipe Hub was developed and released as an internal alpha feature efficiently in two weeks and successfully explored whether artificial intelligence could output recipes for seamless cart building. And while the output that artificial intelligence provided did not have the success rate for general release, this project exceeded Meijer leadership’s expectations in discovering this conclusion in an efficient, timely manner.

Artificial Intelligence is not magic, creating something from nothing.

AI necessitates a significant investment in manual data entry to yield satisfactory results. While users can help improve outcomes over time through interactions (ChatGPT tracks user interactions to enhance performance), your product must achieve an initial success rate to be valuable to users and maintain the integrity of your brand. As companies integrate artificial intelligence into meaningful experiences, the potential is limitless; it simply requires more effort than many people realize.

This project heavily influenced the design of School Supply List, launched Summer 2024.

Insights I got from the design and interactions principles of Recipe Hub, which are user-friendly and align with Meijer's business objectives, significantly influenced the experience of School Supply List, which successfully launched in 2024.
